PROFILE

Our beloved nation Pakistan is gifted with a number of nature’s bounties including, but not limited to mineral wealth, practically all types of grain, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, a number of mountain ranges, fresh water lakes, rivers, ice-glaciers, and the ever beautiful sea at our southern most end of the country. The same is true for the immense human potential, both in terms of professional expertise in practically every walk of life, as well as intelligent minds behind a growing and prosperous economy. Yet, in spite of all the bounties, both natural and man-made, there are areas where we as Pakistani have lacked behind and are still living in the early 19th century; while other countries of the world, including some of our most immediate neighbours have made tremendous accomplishments.

To name only one, that of health, as also our topic of discussion,it is deplorable that even though the health structure in the entire state may boast of budgetary allocations in billions of rupees, one may openly witness that even today the most deserving and needy are deprived of their fundamental right to health. A brief on the entire health structure of our nation would reveal that majority of the responsibility for providing some of the basic health facilities has been left to the private sector, which according to one estimate reaching more than 80 percent. This leaves a Little more than 20 percent for the state to cater for the health. In this regard, the private sector must be appreciated for the tremendous contributions towards provision of health facilities to every nook and corner of the country. Yet, the private sector has its limitations, the most important of which is financing, even through it may boast of some of the most brilliant minds in the world, Just to provide a name a few amongst hundreds, we must all praise the work done by people such as A. Sattar Edhi, founder/chairman of Edhi Foundation, provider of nation’s largest fleet of ambulances including air-ambulances. Adeeb Rizvi, the founder/chairman of Pakistan’s largest center for treatment of ailments of Kidney state founded project) Dr Mohammad Ali Shah. (founder/chairman of the nation’s largest orthopedic treatment facility A.O.Clinic (private sector), Imran Khan (founder/chairman of Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, (Pakistani’s largest hospital for Cancer treatment, (private sector).
